Biodiversity

Biodiversity, or biological diversity, refers to the immense variety and richness of life on Earth. This includes the diversity of genes within living organisms, the diversity of species of organisms, and the diversity of ecosystems in which the organisms live.

Learn a bit more about biodiversity, and why it is so important to us in the slideshow below.

On the Malaysian Bat Education Adventure we are most concerned about the biodiversity of species, in particular the diversity of bat species in Krau Wildlife Reserve.  Learn more about this incredible diversity and how we identify the different species in the video below.

As biologists, what are we trying to learn when we study biodiversity?  Well, perhaps the first thing we might want to do is to measure the biodiversity of a particular place. In our case that would be all the bat species in one part of Krau Wildlife Reserve. If we can measure biodiversity, we can then compare biodiversity at different places. Go to the Measuring Biodiversity page to learn more.

With so many species in the world (may be as many as 30 million!) its important to try and organize or classify biodiversity based on features that species have in common. Go to the Classifying Biodiversity page to learn more.
